ANKE TIPS: All you need to know about registering your foreign car in Spain

Do you want to re-register your car in Spain? Before you get started, we recommend you check our tips

At Anke Sevenster, we specialise in making the process of registering your car as easy as possible: from the paperwork to the MOT.

Here we answer the most frequently asked questions:

Do I have to re-register my vehicle with foreign plates?

If the vehicle has been in Spain for more than 6 months, re-registration is compulsory (whether you are a resident or not). Not only is it compulsory, but it is highly recommended as it makes it much easier to settle claims in the event of an accident.

How much does it cost to get Spanish plates?

The cost depends on a number of factors. Firstly, it depends on the emissions of the vehicle. To avoid any surprises, it is also advisable to make sure that the vehicle is registered. At Anke Sevenster we can calculate the costs without obligation and confirm that the vehicle is registered in accordance with EU law.

How does it work?

Registration on your own involves a series of visits to the authorities (MOT,  tax and traffic office), for which you will also need some knowledge of Spanish and a lot of patience. We recommend that you use a company that specialises in re-registration, such as Anke Sevenster.

What documents do I need for the transfer?

You will need the original vehicle documents. You will also need the COC (Certificate of Conformity (if you cannot find this, we can get it for you). You will also need proof that you own or rent a property in Spain. And of course your NIE number. Don't have your NIE number yet? Visit our NIE service.

How can I benefit from the registration tax exemption?

The Spanish tax authorities are very strict and will check carefully that you are officially transferring your residence to Spain and that the vehicle arrived in Spain less than 60 days ago. It is important to note that the re-registration must take place within 60 days of the transfer of tax residence.

When must the vehicle be insured?

As soon as the vehicle is registered in Spain, you must take out insurance. At Anke Sevenster we also accept your home country's premium to get the best possible price. Do not hesitate to ask us for a quote for your car insurance, just follow HERE.

Do I have to pass the ITV if I already have one in force? Yes, you do. In addition, the ITV for registration is special, an engineer will verify that the car complies with the relevant homologations.
